Francis Julius LeMoyne, M.D. Dr. John Julius LeMoyne and his wife moved into the LeMoyne House in 1813 with their only child, 15-year-old Francis Julius. Francis soon entered nearby Washington College and followed his father into the practice of medicine. Committed to his medical practice, Dr. Francis was also concerned with civic and humanitarian matters. He served as a trustee of Washington College and was instrumental in founding the Washington Female Seminary. Nationally known as an abolitionist, Dr. F. J. LeMoyne ran for governor on an anti-slavery ticket. The LeMoyne House was a stop on the Underground Railroad
, a series of safe houses that helped slaves escape to the north and freedom. |
